Safe streets

It is essential to ensure that the District invests in our streets so that they are safe and welcoming for everyone, whether on foot, wheelchair, bike, bus, or car.

Truxton Circle is bordered by three busy roads: New Jersey Ave, New York Ave, and North Capitol St. Too often we see cars speeding through as they seek to use our neighborhood as a cut-through. From speed bumps to sidewalks, the ANC is a powerful voice for ensuring our neighborhood's streets are designed with our community in mind. I will be an advocate for traffic calming measures to ensure that Truxton Circle is a neighborhood where children heading to school, adults commuting to work, or families enjoying an afternoon walk can feel confident and secure wherever they go and however they travel in the neighborhood.

Safe community

ANC Commissioners can play a critical role in calling attention to public safety concerns in our community. While fortunately uncommon, we continue to see incidents in our neighborhood--including gun violence--which might have been prevented through improved responsiveness to concerns called-in by neighbors. Too frequently these are small incidents which, when not responded to or without proper de-escalation when they occur, result in bigger disturbances weeks or months later.

As Commissioner Kyle will work with MPD and the Safe Passage program are more responsive to community concerns throughout the ANC.

Accessible and Affordable Housing

Both rent and home prices have soared more than 30% in Truxton Circle over the last five years. Maintaining housing affordability is essential to ensuring our neighborhood remains accessible to lifelong residents as well as new neighbors seeking to establish roots.

I believe that the growing difficulty of being able to afford to live in Truxton Circle (and DC overall) is because there are simply more people who want to live here than there are homes that are currently available. Being a desirable neighborhood is not a bad thing! But ensuring that Truxton Circle remains accessible to a wide variety of families of different incomes and backgrounds means supporting building more homes.

The ANC plays a critical role in helping ensure that our neighborhood continues to be vibrant, distinct, and welcoming to residents and business alike. As an ANC Commissioner, I will advocate for more affordable housing as well as for increasing housing production by expanding what can be built "by right."
